How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home (Step by Step)
Share
Plenty of us wear a bra size we picked years ago and never checked again. Bodies change, brands size differently, and a bra that fitted last year might not fit today. The good news: you can measure yourself at home in about five minutes.
What you need
- A soft fabric tape measure
- A mirror
- An unpadded bra, or no bra at all
Step 1: Measure your underbust
Wrap the tape around your ribcage, directly under your bust, where the band of a bra sits. Keep it snug and level all the way round (check in the mirror that it is not dipping at the back). Breathe out normally and note the number.
Step 2: Measure your bust
Now measure around the fullest part of your bust, usually across the nipples. Keep the tape level and relaxed, so it sits on the skin without squashing.
Step 3: Find your size
For traditional lettered sizes, the band comes from your underbust and the cup comes from the difference between your bust and underbust. Each cup letter is usually a step of around 2 to 2.5 cm, but every brand sizes a little differently, so always check that brand’s own chart.
Stretch, seamless bras like ours use simple S to XXXL sizing. Match both measurements to the chart below:
| Size | Bust (fullest part) | Underbust |
|---|---|---|
| S | 84–91 cm (33–36 in) | 71–78 cm (28–31 in) |
| M | 91–96 cm (36–38 in) | 76–83 cm (30–33 in) |
| L | 96–101 cm (38–40 in) | 81–88 cm (32–35 in) |
| XL | 101–106 cm (40–42 in) | 86–94 cm (34–37 in) |
| XXL | 106–111 cm (42–44 in) | 91–99 cm (36–39 in) |
| XXXL | 111–116 cm (44–46 in) | 96–106 cm (38–42 in) |
If your two measurements point to different sizes, or you are right on the line between two, go for the larger size. Seamless knit bras are designed to fit close to the body, and a little more room is usually more comfortable.
Step 4: Check the fit
Measurements get you close; how the bra feels gets you the rest of the way. Put it on and check:
- The band sits level all the way round and you can slide about two fingers underneath. Start on the loosest hook, so you can tighten it as the band relaxes over time.
- The cups lie smooth, with no spilling over the top or sides and no empty wrinkles.
- The straps stay put without digging in. Most of the support should come from the band, not your shoulders.
- Lift your arms above your head. If the band rides up, it is too loose.
When to measure again
It is worth re-measuring every six to twelve months, and any time your body changes, for example after weight changes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or a new fitness routine.
