Which Bra Suits Your Breast Shape? A Friendly Guide
Share
Two people can wear the exact same size and still find that one bra fits one of them beautifully and the other not at all. That is because shape matters just as much as size. There is no right or wrong shape: every body is normal, and most of us are a mix of a few. Use this guide as a starting point, not a rulebook.
How to tell your shape
Stand in front of a mirror without a bra, then lean forward slightly. Notice where your fullness sits (top, bottom or evenly), how far apart your breasts are, and which way your nipples point. That is all you need.
Round
Equally full at the top and bottom. Lucky you: most styles work, from plunges to full cups. A smooth seamless bra keeps the natural shape without adding bulk.
Teardrop
Slightly fuller at the bottom than the top, the most common shape. Balconette, push-up and moulded cups suit you well, adding a little fullness to the upper cup.
East-west
Nipples point outward, away from the centre. Look for push-up and plunge styles with angled or moulded cups that gently bring the bust towards the centre.
Side-set
A wider gap between the breasts. Plunge bras and styles with side support help create a closer, more centred look.
Close-set
Little or no space between the breasts. A low centre (plunge) avoids the middle of the bra digging in, and stretchy seamless cups are comfortable because there is no hard centre piece.
Bell shape
Narrower at the top and fuller at the bottom. Full-cup styles with a firm band give the most support and comfort.
Relaxed or softer
Breast tissue that is softer, with the nipples pointing downward. Full coverage cups, a supportive band and slightly wider straps give a lifted, comfortable feel.
Slender
Narrow and longer, with less fullness overall. Soft wire-free bras and lightly padded or push-up cups add shape without feeling stiff.
Asymmetric
One side larger than the other, which is completely normal. Fit the larger side, then choose stretch cups that adapt, or add a removable pad to the smaller side.
Where a seamless, wire-free bra fits in
Stretch knit cups mould to your body rather than asking your body to fit a rigid cup. That makes them a comfortable everyday option for many shapes, especially round, teardrop, close-set and asymmetric shapes, and anyone who wants comfort over structure.
The golden rule
Whatever your shape, the fit checks are the same: a level band, smooth cups and straps that do not dig. Our guide on measuring your bra size at home walks you through them.
