7 Common Bra Fit Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Most bra discomfort comes down to fit, and the good news is that each common problem has a pretty clear cause. Here is how to read the signs.

1. The band rides up at the back

What it means: the band is too loose, so it is not anchoring the bra.

Fix: move to a tighter hook. If you are already on the tightest one, go down a band size (or a size down in S–XXXL sizing).

2. The straps keep slipping off

What it means: the straps are too loose, set too wide for your shoulders, or the band is too big.

Fix: shorten adjustable straps first. If the band is loose, fix that too. For narrow or sloping shoulders, styles with straps set closer together help.

3. The straps dig into your shoulders

What it means: the straps are doing work the band should be doing.

Fix: loosen the straps a little and check the band is snug. A firmer band takes the weight off your shoulders.

4. The cups wrinkle or gape

What it means: the cup is too big or the wrong shape for you.

5. You are spilling over the top or sides

What it means: the cups are too small.

Fix: go up a cup size, or up a size in S–XXXL sizing.

6. The centre does not sit against your chest

What it means: in a structured bra, the cups are usually too small, or the style does not suit a close-set shape.

Fix: try a larger cup, or a plunge or wire-free style with no rigid centre.

7. Bulges at the back or sides

What it means: the band may be too tight or too narrow.

Fix: try a looser hook or a bra with a wider, smoother band. Seamless bras with a four-row hook closure spread the pressure more evenly.

• Band level all the way round, two fingers fit underneath
• Cups smooth, no spilling, no wrinkles
• Straps stay put without digging
• Arms up: the band stays in place
